La Legge 23 dicembre 1998 n. 448 ha introdotto l'assegno di maternità, concesso dai Comuni ed erogato dall'INPS, per le nascite, gli affidamenti preadottivi e le adozioni senza affidamento avvenuti dal 1° luglio 2000.
E' concesso alle donne, residenti nel Comune, cittadine italiane, comunitarie e extracomunitarie in possesso della carta di soggiorno, il cui I.S.E.E., in caso di nucleo familiare composto da tre persone, non superi € 32.222,66.
Law n.448 dated 23/12/1998 has introduced the maternity benefit which is distributed by INPS, for births, custody and adoptions without custody registered since the 1st of July of 2000.
The service is addressed to women, living in the municipality, with an Italian, EU, or even non EU citizenship (if In possess of the permit of stay), with an I.S.E.E. not superior than 32.222,66 €, in case of family unit formed by 3 members.

La domanda per beneficiare dell'assegno deve essere presentata entro sei mesi dalla data del parto o dell'ingresso del bambino nel nucleo familiare.
Il contributo è erogato successivamente direttamente dall'INPS in due tranche.
The application should be made within 6 months from the childbirth or from the entrance of the baby into the family unit.
The allowance is then distributed by INPS with 2 instalments.

L'assegno è riservato alle donne che non lavorano e si trovano nella situazione di non poter usufruire di alcuna contribuzione di maternità da parte dell'INPS o di altro istituto previdenziale.
Per l'anno 2009, l'importo massimo erogabile dell'assegno è di € 1.545,55.
The maternity benefit has been created for unemployed women who do not benefit from other contributions for maternity distributed by INPS or another institute for social security.
For the year 2009 the maximum that can be distributed is of € 1.545,55.
